Fred L. Turner, Sr., age 74, of Hillsboro, died Monday, September 20, 2004 at his residence. He was born January 6, 1930, in New Vienna, the son of the late Samuel T. and Clara Bell (Rollins) Turner, Jr. He was a member of the Wesleyan Church, currently known as A Place for Grace in Hillsboro and the Highland County Sr. Citizens Center. He was a 1950 graduate of the New Vienna High School and served in the United States Navy from 1950-1954. He was employed at the Wilmington Casting Company for 16 years, eight of which he served as Union President. He served 4 years as President of the local chapter of the NAACP. He worked at Rotary Forms Press in Hillsboro for 13 years, and worked on the street department from November 1971 until June 1974 in the city of Hillsboro. He worked for the city of Hillsboro Police Department from 1960-1980. He then worked at the District 9 Department of Transportation for 10 years as a maintenance worker. He is survived by his wife Mary (Brown) Turner, to whom he was united in marriage on March 22, 2003; six sons, Michael Turner of San Diego, California, Lawrence Turner of Hillsboro, Fred (Jeanetta) Turner of Leesburg, Charles (Beverly) Turner of Jackson, Mississippi, Reginal (Wendy) Turner of Wilmington and Timothy (Tennille) Turner of Leesburg; two daughters, Angela (David) Garrison and Anita Turner of Hillsboro; two brothers Paul Turner of New Vienna and Donald Darling of Dayton; one sister Geraldine Williams of Xenia; 13 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and a host of nieces nephews family and friends. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his first wife Janet Marie (Williams) Turner; three brothers Harry, Tom and Delbert Turner and two sisters Rebecca Hamilton and Helen Turner. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 25, 2004 at New Hope Baptist Church, 128 Beech Street, Hillsboro. Pastors Michael Hudson, Charles M. Hancock, and Kevin Bennett will officiate. Burial will follow in the Hillsboro Cemetery. Immediately following the interment, a gathering of family and friends will be held at the Highland County Senior Citizen’s Center on Muntz Street where a luncheon will be served. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at A Place for Grace Church on North East Street, Hillsboro.
