
Fay ”Norman” DeHaas age 69 of Hillsboro died Thursday, October 16, 2003 at the Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. He was born August 31, 1934 near Greenfield, in Fayette County Ohio the son of the late Frank and Velma (Shockey) DeHaas. Norman was an inspector for the Department of Commerce, Industrial Compliance, Bedding Division for the State of Ohio. He was a member of the Hillsboro First United Methodist Church, a member and past exalted ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #361, member and past president of the Highland County Scottish Rite Club, member of Highland Lodge #38 F. &A.M., Scottish Rite Valley of Cincinnati, Highland Chapter #40 Royal Arch Masons, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #1161, Highland County Republican Club, and the Hillsboro High School Class of 1953. He was very instrumental in the formation of the Hillsboro High School Athletic Booster’s Club and the organization of the Hillsboro Little League Baseball when it was first played at the Highland County Fairgrounds. Norman had been honored for his community contributions several times. He was named citizen of the month for September 1985, he and his wife Joan were the Grand Marshall’s of the Hillsboro Holiday Parade in 1997 and was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 2001. Norman was a very patriot citizen, he had served as the U.S.A. Flag Day chairman for Hillsboro for nineteen years, he was the driving force behind getting the Vietnam Veterans Moving Wall displayed at the FACT Park in 1995, was instrumental in organizing the placement of the veteran’s monument at Liberty Park, had assisted the Highland District Hospital Auxiliary in obtaining the flag poles that now fly over the main entrance at Hospital and had supervised the installation and dedication of the flag poles that now stand at many public and private locations during Flag Day services. He was also well known for his role as Santa Claus not only in Hillsboro but also in Cincinnati. He is survived by his wife, Joan (Frost) DeHaas whom he had married on February 12, 1955 in Hillsboro, one son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Mina DeHaas of Hillsboro, one daughter and son-in-law, Renee and Gary Breeden of Hillsboro, mother-in-law, Goldie Frost of New Vienna, one sister Barbara Pumlee of Franklin, Ohio, half-sister Mary Jane Wilzbach of California, two grandchildren, Kevin DeHaas II and Hanna Nicole Breeden of Hillsboro. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dorman DeHaas and a half-brother, Charles Gray. Services will be held 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Pastor Chuck Tabor will officiate. Burial will follow in the Dunn’s Chapel Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Fraternal Order of Eagles services will be held at 5:00 p.m. and Masonic and Scottish Ring services will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro.
