You know, the little ones truly enjoyed going to great-grandma Burton's house for more than just the Tootsie Rolls and Chocolate and Peanut Butter Cups (and they ALL knew where to find them)...it was also because of the love she expressed with those kisses on the chubby cheeks and pats on the little behinds. She will be missed by more people than we will ever know!

I did't know her, but I knew several of her sons and I always thought that they were some of the finest men that I had the pleasure of meeting. I know that you all loved her very much and will miss her even more than any words can say. Just know that she is resting with the Angels and will keep watch over all her loved ones. God Bless and keep you thru the coming days.

To all the family. Doug and I were just wondering how many cups of coffee Opie (or as I called her Apple when I was very little)has fixed kids stopping in on there way to school in the mornings. She had a terrific sense of humor and very lovable, but spunky. Had to be,with that many kids and other kids that considered it a 2nd home to stop by. Our thoughts, prayers ,and our hearts go out to all of you. Remember you have many many wonderful, loving, and funny memories to hold in your hearts forever. And someday again you will be with her. She might even have a cup of coffee waiting for you. Thanks for sharing her with so many people. Love, Doug and Bonnie

To Opal's family-I just recently took care of Opal at the hospital & it was truly a pleasure! Even though I could see she was in pain & so weak, she still tried her best & wanted to be as independent as possible. She still had that spunk we all knew & loved! I remember driving by her house & always seeing her sitting on her front porch enjoying the warm weather & all the visitors she always had that loved her so much! She will be missed! Our thoughts & prayers go out to all of you during this time, but know she is in a better place!

Dear Burton Family; What a blessing to have had your mother all of those years. Her sense of humor was great . The Burton family has been very involved in my life over the years. Many of you I have had in school--many of you I have known through work--either yours or mine- I wish I were wise enough to utter words that wwould give you comfort at this time but I must leave that up to God and I know your faith in Him will sustain you. As the years progress we seem to lose those we love and wish we had spent more time telling them about our feelings but we take it for granted that they already know how we feel.Perhaps our loss will encourage us tto express our feelings while we can. Bless you all and thanks for sharing not only your mother with me but also your lives also-- Skip

It is hard to imagine what life will be like without her. I am truly grateful for being blessed with a Grandma like she was. She will be missed more than I could ever say. I married into the Burton family, but according to grandma I was never treated that way. From the first time I met Opal, I was treated as part of the family. I will always remember passing out candy on Halloween and all the little kids wanting to come into the house to show grandma their costumes. She really enjoyed that. Grandma was one spunky lady and I am thankful that I was able to have met and loved her. To the rest of the Burton family God Bless and you all are in my prayers.

Dear the Burton family, I used to live down the road from Opal, and when I went for my walks as a child I would always see Opal out sitting on the porch and I would stop in and say hello and talk for awhile. May the family know that She is the arms of Our heavenly God now. My prayers and thoughts are with the family.

My deepest sympathy to you all. The lives of my family and yours have touched in so many ways for many years, from Mom and Barbara graduating together, to Meghan and Marla babysitting Amy and Abby at Opal's house, and many memories and encounters in-between. I love you all, and can't imagine Lynchburg without one of it's last "icons". I don't live there in town any longer, so I haven't had the pleasure lately of seeing Opal out on the porch for a long time. But I always think of her when I see one of you -- Jamie and Terra at work here at the hospital, Boog greeting people at Wal-Mart, running in to Josh and Meghan and the kids at the store, seeing Jamie at a ball game, Milt at the gas station, or running in to John and Wilma when they're in town for a visit, and other examples too numerous to mention. I recently picked up an old copy of Mom's 25th class reunion picnic out at the Lion's Club park, and there was Barb in the picture. Through each of you, she's had a profound effect on many lives in this county, and I'll never forget her.

If I sat here and told you about how much grandma was so loved it would take more than this block can hold writing. Our grandma was such a treasure. Walking in to her house and seeing her in the corner on her chair with her eyes straight on you to see who it was this time. She always told me she was proud of me for going back to school and raising MacKenzie like I have. I will definitely miss the talks we had about problems I couldn't solve. Sometimes it takes a woman like her to set you straight. She touched so many other lives except her own kids, grandkids and great grandkids. For those who knew her, you are very lucky!

What can I say about my Grandma Burton? Actually, words cannot express what she meant to me, my entire family and the town of Lynchburg. She had so many stories that I loved to listen to from the early days and how the small town of Lynchburg used to be. She was like a history book filled with knowledge and the memory like no other. She could tell you a grandkid and what number that grandkid fell in order of all her grandkids. I knew that this day would come someday, but you can NEVER prepare for the sorrow and hurt you feel for a woman this special. I will miss you greatly and hope to see you again someday. We were very sorry to hear of the death of Opal last week. We were not able to attend the visitation or funeral service, but we wanted to express our sympathy to all who were close to her. We know many of the family members well and we know there is a great loss among all of you at this time. We know she had a great love for her family and the community and she will be missed by many friends and neighbors. Our thoughts and prayers go to each of you at this time of sorrow.

Mr Burton,

I am saddened to hear of the passing of your mother. I understand the sense of loss this leaves you with and am sending thoughts of health and well being. Please extend my condolences to the rest of your family and know that there are many who are thinking of you in various places around the country. Your contribution to my education and development into an adult was probably much more significant than you can know. I still refer to my memories of your guidance and teaching when I speak to friends of integrity and compassion. I still contend you were the best teacher I ever had.

Thinking of you and yours,

Charlie Kniceley

What can I say about Grandma Burton. She welcomed me into her home just as she did her grandchildren. I will miss our late night talks over a bowl of cereal. She was always willing to fill my tummy, no matter the time of day. She always was willing to help out when ever needed. She was a blessing to my family. At some point or another we have all spent the night at her house. She was a grandmother to us all. I know just how close her and Marla Mae were. She was an amazing woman! I could go on for days on her many wonderful qualities! She will be truly missed, because she was truly loved!
